Freshwater Academy is a week-long camp that gives high school students the opportunity for hands-on experience and fieldwork in Northwestern Pennsylvania's waterways. Students spend their days studying biology and freshwater ecology at a level they can't achieve in the classroom. They will get wet, they will get dirty, and they will love it!

Learning to Canoe
Tomorrow we will be going on a canoe trip down the creek so today we went to the lake to work on our canoeing skills. We started the outing with a healthy lunch of sandwiches, fruit and veggies, and cookies. Then we settled in to listen to an educational lecture on life jackets and how to properly use them. Then the real fun began. Before we got the canoes out, we found a small brown snake. We launched the canoes and were off. We learned how to turn and stop and maneuver around objects. With the help of Brian and Vallery, we all gained a sufficient knowledge of how to canoe safely.

Where was the snake? How big was it? That might have ended my desire to canoe any more.
Did anyone fall in? Any funny stories?
Good luck on your canoe trip everyone! Don't fall in!!!!
It was just a little, harmless snake. Nothing to be afraid of! It was found under a rock in some bushes that were close to the lake. Everyone did very well, even if it was their first time in a canoe. No one fell in, but there did end up to be quite a bit of splashing so some people did end up a little wet. Everyone had a good time, but also learned a lot!
