Astronomy at Allegheny!!

We went to the observatory on campus and used their telescope to examine the night sky! The massive telescope dates back 100 years; it was a true relic! We learned about the motions of the stars and planets, and identified the big and little dipper, the three stars of the summer triangle (Vega, Deneb, and Altair), Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn! The telescope was so powerful we could clearly see Saturn's rings, and Jupiter's moons!

What an amazing experience to explore the night’s sky in such an iconic building with original equipment! A once in a lifetime learning experience.

I wondered if the observatory was still functional - glad to see that it is still helping us explore the skies 100 years later!

Its great to know it is the same telescope equipment as when I was a student at Allegheny back in the dinosaur years of the 1980s.
